Distinguished University Professor Emeritus Jan V. Sengers delivered the plenary scientific lecture titled "Nonequilibrium Phenomena in Fluids: A History of Surprises" at the 8th International Meeting on Thermodiffusion (IMT8) held in Bonn, Germany June 9-13. He also served on the conference's scientific advisory board. The biannual IMT is organized by the European Group of Thermodiffusión Research, a permanent working team of the European Centre for Advanced Studies in Thermodynamics.

This year's research topics included thermal diffusion in crystal growth, polymer processing, micro-gravity, porous media, and biological transport; thermodynamic and statistical mechanics of fluid in thermal gradients; hydrodynamic instabilities; experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods in thermal diffusion; thermophoresis in a variety of media; and applications of thermal diffusion.
