PrerequisitesÂ
The Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Graduate Program encourages applicants with chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and other related engineering backgrounds to apply to our program. The Graduate Program has no explicit requirements regarding prerequisites; however, students are expected to have the background necessary to be successful at taking the core Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering graduate courses: ENCH 610 (Thermodynamics), ENCH 620 (Methods of Engineering Analysis), ENCH 630 (Transport Phenomena), and ENCH 640 (Reaction Kinetics). The Graduate Admissions Committee may recommend that an incoming student take selected undergraduate courses before the core courses. Specifically, students are expected to have a working knowledge of the material covered in the following undergraduate classes prior to attempting ENCH 610-640:
- Material and Energy Balances (i.e., ENCH 215)
- Thermodynamics (i.e., ENCH 300)
- Transport Phenomena and Unit Operations (i.e., ENCH 422, 424)
- Kinetics (i.e., ENCH 440) and
- All the chemistry, physics, and mathematics classes that are prerequisties for the above.
GPA Requirements
The Graduate School requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA in all courses for credit since enrollement. The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering further requires that students attain at least a 3.0 GPA in the four graduate core courses ENCH 610-640 where this GPA is computed using the letter+/- system. This GPA is computed by the following numerical equivalents:
A
|
A-
|
B+
|

Therefore, receiving the grades of B, B, B-, and B- in the four core courses would not be sufficient to receive a graduate degree from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.
