Research Into A Rare Cancer (Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP))
Thomas McAvoy
Professor Emeritus
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Institute for Systems Research
University of Maryland
This seminar will discuss research into a rare cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). PMP causes very large muscinous tumors in the peritoneal cavity and its survival statistics are poor. The talk will give background on the disease, and then an hypothesis about micro-organism involvement in PMP will be presented. This hypothesis has been verified through testing over 100 tumors from PMP patients. An approach to improving patient survivability through the use of pre and post-operative antibiotics in conjunction with surgery will be discussed. The seminar will discuss practical and technical issues involved in the research, as well as lessons learned from it. Lastly, future research will be presented.
