The study of the interfacial dynamics of membrane-enclosed fluid volumes, such as artificial capsules and red blood cells, has seen an increased interest during the last few decades due to their numerous engineering and biomedical applications. In this talk, we will discuss our theoretical analysis used to explain the capsule extensional dynamics and the ambiguity in the determination of the erythrocyte shear modulus, as well as our novel non-stiff cytoskeleton-based erythrocyte modeling. Via computational investigation, we propose a new methodology for the determination of the elastic properties of the membrane of artificial capsules which is essential for the better design of the various devices they are utilized. In addition, we will discuss our recent work on cusp formation and UFO shapes for capsules in non-linear extensional Stokes flows via challenging computations.
