Destroying Syria's Chemical Weapons: Design and Deployment of the Field Deployable Hydrolysis System

The Field Deployable Hydrolysis System (FDHS) was designed and demonstrated in a six-month period in 2013 to provide the Department of Defense with a transportable capability for destruction of bulk liquid chemical agent and precursors. Following Syria's accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention, the FDHS was chosen as the destruction engine for Syria's stockpiled Schedule 1 compounds: sulfur mustard and the sarin nerve agent precursor DF. The equipment was installed onto the Motor Vessel Cape Ray, part of the Maritime Administration's Ready Reserve Fleet, in December 2013 and January 2014. In July and August 2014, the Cape Ray FDHS safely destroyed 600 metric tons of mustard and DF while at sea, and delivered the resulting liquid waste to two facilities in Europe for final disposition.
