Atmospheric Plasma Processing of Materials: Fundamentals and Applications

Daphne Pappas
U.S. Army Research Laboratory
Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

In the past decade, atmospheric plasma processing of materials has attracted a lot of attention, especially as it can be considered a new, "green" method to modify and coat the surfaces of a variety of materials. In this seminar, the developments in this technological area, from Siemens' discovery of ozone production in 1857 to the micron-size patterning of biomaterial scaffolds for controlled cell growth in 2011 will be discussed. More specifically, research results in the area of dielectric barrier discharges with emphasis in the functionalization of polymers, deposition of organic and inorganic coatings, and plasma processing of biomaterials will be presented.

This Event is For: Graduate • Faculty • Post-Docs
