Materials, Technology, and Future Challenges for Glass

Every day, we look literally look through high technology that delicately balances performance, cost, and aesthetics. Windows contain engineered glass to control heat transfer in order to save energy; yet they are beautiful, and connect people to the outdoors. Glass in automobiles protect property and provide safety; but must be bent and free of optical distortions. Mobile electronic displays are scratch resistant and strong, but it is made inexpensively and in vast quantities. Glass elements in interiors communicate success, wealth, and confidence while providing functional features like privacy, and wear resistance.
In this talk, we will look at glass from the point of view of the Guardian Industries' Science and Technology Team. We will to examine the high technology of making "low-e" window glass from the materials, optical filter design, and manufacturing. We will explore the future challenges for glass in building envelopes and interiors, as well as, new markets like transparent public information displays. Answering these challenges requires us to cross science and engineering disciplines. Success depends on our ability to solve problems throughout the value chain.
