2008-2009 ChBE Undergraduate Awards

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) undergraduates were among the award recipients at the 2008-2009 A. James Clark School of Engineering's Honors and Awards Ceremony, held April 29. The event honors students from all departments who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance, research, and contributions to their departments or fields. ChBE Professor and Chair F. Joseph Schork presented the awards.

This year, the awards and their recipients were:

David Arthur Berman Memorial Award
Presented to the student majoring in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering with the highest cumulative scholastic average at the end of the first semester of his or her junior year, and who has been elected to Tau Beta Pi.

Awarded to Joseph Lim.

Joseph Lim is a junior in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and was recognized for his excellent academic record as well as his contributions to the department. He is the corresponding secretary for the Maryland Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, a Clark School Ambassador and a mentor for the Office of Community Service-Learning at the University of Maryland. He is a participant in University Honors and Gemstone, a team-oriented interdisciplinary honors research program. His honors and recognitions include; Banneker-Key Scholarship, Maryland Distinguished Scholar, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Research Fellowship, ASPIRE Scholarship, C. Norman Eckert Member Scholarship from Tau Beta Pi and Best Poster in Biochemistry/Biophysics at Bioscience Research Day (see related story). Lim is also a research assistant in the Molecular and Thermodynamic Modeling Lab under the supervision of Assistant Professor Jeffery Klauda.

Outstanding ASPIRE Research Award
Presented to the ASPIRE (A Scholars Program for Industry-Oriented Research in Engineering) student who has carried out the most successful research project.

Awarded to Adam Behrens.

Adam Behrens is a junior in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In his ASPIRE project, he developed a purely synthetic, nanostructured polymer that is able to induce the body's natural haemostatic coagulation process to form a robust blood clot, even in the absence of platelets or blood cells. This polymer gel will have important applications as a general haemostatic, especially for patients with platelet disorders. (See related story)

Chairman's Award
Presented for excellence in academics, outstanding service to the department, or outstanding leadership in the department.

Awarded to Leigh Quang.

Leigh Quang is a graduating senior in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and is being recognized for his academic excellence as well and his contributions to the department. Quang is an undergraduate researcher in the Complex Fluids and Nanomaterials Group, an undergraduate teaching assistant for ENCH 215, and a Keystone Tutor. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Outstanding Senior Award

Awarded to Nicholas Levy.

Nicholas Levy was recognized for his outstanding scholastic achievement and demonstrated service and leadership to the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He has been on the Dean’s list from Fall 2005 to present and is an ASPIRE scholarship recipient. He is in the Math Success Program where he is a head math tutor. Levy also is an undergraduate research assistant in the Complex Fluids and Nanomaterials Group.
