Therapeutic Nanoparticles that Overcome Biological Barriers
Anthony Kim
Assistant Professor
Departments of Neurosurgery
and Pharmaceutical Sciences
University of Maryland, Baltimore

A major limitation in the treatment of glioblastoma (GBM) and other invasive cancers is delivery of therapeutics to invading tumor cells outside of the area that is safe for surgical removal and the source of disease progression. Therefore, effective delivery to these invading cancer cells represents a promising therapeutic approach. However, achieving broad particle distribution and selective nanoparticle targeting within the brain remains a significant challenge due to the adhesive extracellular matrix (ECM) and clearance mechanisms in the brain. In this presentation, I will discuss our group’s effort in the development of different strategies to overcome these barriers toward realizing the clinical promise of nanomedicine.

About the Speaker
Anthony Kim is an assistant professor of Neurosurgery and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Kim received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Penn State University in 2001 and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2006. He then completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as an individual NIH NRSA postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Kim joined the faculty of the University of Maryland, Baltimore as an assistant professor in May 2013. He is a recipient of several awards including the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F32) Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011-2013), Wilmer Research Award (2012), PhRMA Foundation Research Starter Grant in Pharmaceutics (2014), and NIH K25 Career Development Award (2014-2017).
