Dr. Stassun, a leading expert and innovator in broadening participation in STEM fields, will address the following:

1) Review the current status of underrepresented minorities in the physical sciences

2) Describe the core elements of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Masters-to-PhD Bridge program as a successful model for effective partnerships with minority-serving institutions

3) Discuss one of the emerging core theories of the program: the concept of students with ‘unrealized or unrecognized potential’

4) Discuss methods to recognize and select for unrealized potential during the admissions process, and how to cultivate that potential toward development

of successful scientists and leaders.

Dr. Stassun is a professor in Physics & Astronomy Department at Vanderbilt University, an adjunct professor at Fisk University and is currently a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Professor at MIT.
