Advanced Electrode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

The emerging fields of electric vehicles and renewable energies demand significant improvements in Li-ion battery technologies. To enhance the energy and power densities of Li-ion batteries, high capacity Si anodes and high energy density sulfur cathodes, with long cycle lives, were developed by our group. Unique Si anodes constructed using a carbon scaffold and patterned tobacco mosaic virus showed exceptionally high capacity and cycling stability. To overcome the challenges caused by poor cycling stability in sulfur cathodes, sulfur-impregnated disordered carbon was synthesized as the cathode material for the lithium-sulfur battery. The obtained sulfur-carbon tube cathodes demonstrated superior cyclability and coulombic efficiency. In addition, a new electroanalytical tool for phase transformation electrodes was developed to precisely measure the Li-diffusion coefficient and interphase mobility in phase transformation electrodes.
