Characterization of structural evolution in polymer nanocomposites is a fundamental challenge that is complicated by multiple length scales. Here we report the identification of four separate and distinguishable regimes of fluorescence that correspond to structural transitions in layered silicate polymer nanocomposites containing the cationic fluorescence probe Nile Blue A.
