Dimitrakopoulos Promoted


The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering would like to extend its congratulations to Assistant Professor Panagiotis Dimitrakopoulos, who has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, effective July 1.

Dimitrakopoulos received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1998. As the director of the BioFluid Dynamics Laboratory, his research involves the dynamics of drops and bubbles in microfluidics and porous media, hemodynamics and hemopathology in the microcirculation, dynamics of synthetic and biological polymers as well as the development of novel computational methodologies for the accurate and efficient study of these physical systems. He has been awarded three NSF grants for computational studies on drop dynamics, hemodynamics in the microcirculation, and for the development of interfacial spectral boundary methods for deformable particles such as droplets, capsules, red blood cells and vesicles. His research has also been supported by two grants from ACS Petroleum Research Fund for studies on drop displacement in porous media to enhance the secondary oil recovery. Dimitrakopoulos' research has resulted in publications in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physics of Fluids, Journal of Computational Physics, Journal of Chemical Physics, Physical Review E., and Physical Review Letters. He regularly serves as session chair at the AIChE annual meetings, and is currently serving as the Organizer for Area 10d (Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis) of the 2008 AIChE annual meeting.
