ChBE Assistant Professor Taylor Woehl has received a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award for the 2017-2018 academic year, granted by the Oak Ridge Associate Universities (ORAU) consortium. This annual grant, offered to 37 faculty members of affiliated institutions in any of the science and technology disciplines, comes with $5k in seed money, which will be matched by the faculty member’s institution, UMD in this case.

“The Powe awards recognize the research and professional growth of young faculty and help them to identify new funding opportunities,” said Arlene Garrison, ORAU Vice President. “ORAU is proud to support the future of science through these emerging academic leaders.”

The goal of Woehl’s research project entitled, Engineering Mesoscale Interactions to Stabilize Dealloyed Bimetallic Nickel Platinum Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts, is to “investigate the effects of mesoscale properties (particle size and interparticle separation) on the stability of d-PtNi ORR electrocatalysts using liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM).” In a nutshell, this will offer clean energy technology for automobiles.

ORUA is partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and consists of 121 university members.
