Advanced Control and Dynamic Real-time Optimization for Large-scale Processes
Rui Huang
Senior Research Scientist, System Dynamics and Optimization Group
United Technologies Research Center

Current advances of optimization algorithm and software enable us to solve large-scale optimization problems online. This improves the economic performances of dynamic real-time optimization (D-RTO) and economic nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). This talk discusses my PhD work in this area and a large-scale air separation unit (ASU) is used for simulation study. Around 6% cost reduction is achieved by the D-RTO compare to the set-point tracking NMPC in a demand response setting. In addition, offset-free control formulation based on the first-principle model is developed in the presence of plant-model mismatch. Finally, novel economic D-RTO formulations with guaranteed nominal stability property are proposed and significant economic benefits are observed.

About the Speaker
Dr. Huang is a Senior Research Scientist in the United Technologies Research Center. He works within the System Dynamics and Optimization Group, providing technical expertise and direction in the areas of optimization, advanced control and operation research, utilizing his skills in integer and large-scale numerical optimization, and associated software tools and platforms. He has published over 10 journal papers and many conference papers. He also served as a guest editor for the Control Engineering Practice and the American Control Conference. He chaired the AIChE workshop on smart grid for the chemical process industry in 2013. Dr. Huang achieved his Ph.D. in the Chemical Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University, working with Professor Lorenz Biegler. He obtained both his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Zhejiang University, China. In addition, he worked as a research intern in Robert Bosch Research Center to develop non-intrusive load monitoring algorithms.
